Background of the Study

Malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five in Nigeria, with Borno State being among the regions most affected (Mohammed et al., 2023). Despite the availability of preventive measures such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and antimalarial drugs, malaria continues to have a high incidence in many parts of Nigeria due to factors such as poor knowledge, misconceptions, and lack of access to preventive resources (Musa et al., 2024). Health education plays a crucial role in improving knowledge about malaria prevention, encouraging the adoption of preventive measures, and ultimately reducing the incidence of the disease.

In Borno State, where the healthcare infrastructure is severely impacted by conflict and displacement, health education programs could help empower communities to take preventive actions against malaria. This study will investigate the impact of health education on childhood malaria prevention in Borno State, focusing on the effectiveness of various educational interventions and their influence on caregivers’ behavior and malaria prevention practices.

Statement of the Problem

Despite malaria being a preventable disease, childhood malaria continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality in Borno State. The lack of effective health education and community-based awareness programs may be contributing factors to low adoption of malaria prevention strategies. This study aims to investigate how health education can improve childhood malaria prevention practices in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of health education on improving caregivers’ knowledge of childhood malaria prevention in Borno State.
  2. To investigate the impact of health education on the adoption of malaria prevention practices by caregivers in Borno State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving health education programs aimed at childhood malaria prevention in Borno State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is health education in improving caregivers’ knowledge about childhood malaria prevention in Borno State?
  2. What impact does health education have on the adoption of malaria prevention practices by caregivers in Borno State?
  3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of health education in childhood malaria prevention?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Health education significantly improves caregivers’ knowledge of malaria prevention in Borno State.
  2. Health education leads to a higher adoption of malaria prevention practices by caregivers in Borno State.
  3. Tailored community-based health education programs are more effective in reducing childhood malaria incidence in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on caregivers and families in Borno State who have children under the age of five. Data will be collected through surveys and focus group discussions. Limitations include challenges in accessing conflict-affected areas and potential biases in caregiver responses.

Definitions of Terms
